September has been a busy and exciting month on the water! I spent most of my days guiding guests on day floats along the Lower Sacramento River, where we focused on swinging flies with light 3-weight trout Spey rods. There’s something special about that subtle grab turning into a full-on battle—and this month brought plenty of those moments.

We found a good number of fish throughout the month, and even hooked into a Steelhead that gave us a quick thrill before shaking free. The conditions were generally fair to good, with weather that kept us guessing—everything from cool, mild mornings to torrential rain and even a few days nearing 100°F.

Flows held steady around 7,000 CFS, providing plenty of beautiful swing water to explore. The variety of runs, riffles, and tailouts made each float unique—and incredibly fun.

Fall River — A Few Tough Bites, but Strong Hatches

I managed to sneak in one day on Fall River, and while the fishing was on the tougher side, the river itself did not disappoint. There were abundant hatches and several solid opportunities for dry fly action, which made for a satisfying day on the water despite the challenge.

If the weather remains mild, Fall River should fish well through mid-October, giving late-season anglers one more window to experience its legendary clarity and wild trout.

No two days on the water are ever the same. That is what makes fly fishing so addictive. One day you are watching trout rise gently to a dry fly under soft light, and the next you are feeling the sudden jolt of a fish taking a swung fly mid-current. Every cast teaches you something—about timing, water movement, or patience. Whether you fish to relax, to challenge yourself, or simply to connect with nature, fly fishing offers a rhythm that grounds you and keeps you coming back.

Looking Ahead — Trinity River Steelhead Season Starts Now 🌲

Next week marks an exciting shift as I begin my Fall Steelhead season on the Trinity River. This is one of my favourite times of year—cooler mornings, changing colours, and the thrill of chasing Steelhead on the swing.

If you’ve been thinking about experiencing this run, now’s the time to plan your trip. I still have a few openings for guided days on the Trinity River, and I can also accommodate late-season floats on Fall River while conditions hold.
